MY CAT SLEEPS IN A WASH TUB BASIN

Writer: BXSCI ANIMAL BEHAVIOR BLOGBXSCI ANIMAL BEHAVIOR BLOG

As some of you may know from reading my introduction post, I have two cats named Max and Ruby (brother and sister). What you might not know is just how strange they, and many other cats, are...

For instance, we have a small grey plastic basin that we usually use for bringing water outside and washing my dog Rocky's feet. However, Ruby has decided to claim the basin as her own nap place and spends hours and hours just sitting in the basin! You can slide her around the house, lift the basin up, spin it around (I usually wouldn't condone this, but she likes it for some reason), etc and she won't want to leave. But nothing beats a cardboard box. As soon as a package arrives to the house and the box is emptied, she jumps right in and makes herself comfortable, and Max follows in suit. Boxes are her all-time favorite kind of container to sit in!

Collection of the wonderful grey basin and other containers my cats prefer over their cat tower, bed, our beds, the couch, and anything that would seem more comfortable than the container:

So why is it that cats, and some other animals as well, love to be in small places? A reasonable (and the most popular) explanation is that seeking out confined spaces is instinctual for our feline friends. In the wild, these spaces would allow cats to either hide from predators or stalk prey.

Except Ruby. She's just weird.
